Why does Michonne have a nice new white shirt, perfectly clean. Yet, Rick is still in his ripped up, muddy and bloody shirt?

the fact that she takes care of herself (hygiene is important in the best of times, and in survival conditions it is more so), changes clothing, etc. reflects that choice. The question she puts to Rick is also an indicator of that. Is this a temporary stop or is it where they remain? Do we move forward (try and find the others) or do we remain in this spot, this place. ( stagnant, wallow, forget the others, etc..)

Rick is still sorta stuck right now. So his appearance reflects that. He's beat and beaten. (for now) He usually comes out of it but I don't think he ever fully recovered from all the other events that hit him hard. To him (his POV) it seems like everything that has happened has been one single roiling event of personal failure.

Her character development is far better than anyone else's this season.

I think, with the character development - Carl has come along, too. But, I think Daryl has gone from conflicted redneck to the Aragorn of Georgia.

Rick doesn't get his moment of non-decision decision. That's a good thing, sorta. He needs time for his body to heal but his mind needs to adjust more rapidly. Survival demands it. He reacted pro-actively. So he can adapt mentally but it always seems it take an external catalyst - an immediate danger to get him going - instead of accepting that life goes on even within the frame of constant danger - you just have to roll with it and always be ready. It's less exhausting at this point to see and believe, to accept and to act, than it is to examine and wallow in all the bad.

Yes, life is horrible now. Yes, a truly soul crushing event has taken place. On the other hand, chocolate pudding is good....and it's worth savoring.
