Perhaps the slowest, most tedious movie I've seen in 40 years.
Watching Christian Bale adjust his comb-over just isn't enough drama for me.
Jeremy Renner is engaging, though.

(9,903 posts)before it became the best thing since sliced bread. Thought it was OK, but as retro '70's movies go it wasn't the greatest ever. Now I believe it is getting WAAAY overhyped to the point where it can't help but disappoint. See Dallas Buyer's Club for best movie of 2013.

(95,337 posts)I think because it was a David O Russell movie and that it had such an elite cast of stars in it with 5 stars who all have had Academy Award nominations (Bale, Adams, Lawrence, Cooper and Renner) plus 2 winners (Bale and Lawrence) that made it such a top notch movie.
But even with an actor nominated in each of the 4 acting categories I think the may pull off 1 win. For Bale (Best Actor) and Cooper (Best Supporting Actor) they are going up against the amazing pair from "Dallas Buyers Club" (McConaughey for Best Actor and Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor. Leto pretty much swept the Best supporting Actor with a few wins for the guy from "Captain Phillips". McConaughey has been winning most of the Best Actor awards although Chiwetel Ejiofor from '12 Years a Slave" has snuck in a few wins. And some think that Leonardo DiCarprio is way long overdue to finally win. So very doubtful that any of the men will get the win.
As for the women, Amy Adams will walk away empty again this year because Cate Blanchett pretty much has owned all the big awards this year with her part in "Blue Jasmine" and the is the top winner far and above the rest of the nominees combined. The only possible chance of an American Hustle win will be for Jennifer Lawrence although she's been splitting it with the gal from "12 Years a Slave".
My guess is if the 12 Years gal wins the best-supporting actress Oscar then McConaughey will get his Oscar but if Lawrence wins the Oscar then I think Best Actor will go to Ejiofor. "12 Years" was such a great movie that it deserves something in the acting category.

(20,232 posts)but it wasn't all THAT. I read that it was Bradley Cooper's idea to roll his hair on the tiny curlers. Someone should have done a little research. Men really got perms in the late 70's - early 80's. They didn't roll their hair.

(6,787 posts)Oh well, there's no point in my being so critical. Lots of talented people put a lot of work into it and the acting was super. It just didn't snap. (Or crackle, or pop.)
