I have always taught my kitties to pat me with a paw when they want to be petted. Makes sense to me that you could teach a cat to ask in specific ways for food. I think that as long as you are working to get them something they WANT they will be pretty receptive to the training.

My sister has a pair of cats, but their hearing is OK, so they don't use sign language. They come
right out and say "look, you gonna feed me, or do I shred your bedsheets (New Jersey)?"

Due to their accent, it comes out "rrrrrooooowwwww!" but we have seen the consequences
often enough to know what they mean.

seem to be content letting her be the spokesperson, or cat, as it were.
