I was living in West Texas during that time, frequently driving to LA or Dallas. Driving 55 in the empty desert, with the horizon all around you, feels so ridiculously slow, it's like driving a golf cart. We just considered tickets as trip expenses.

A friend of mine died after falling asleep behind the wheel, driving from Dallas to El Paso. I strongly suspect he'd still be alive if he'd been allowed to go faster (he had no money to pay for speeding tickets or motels) and been able to shave some time off the trip and he'd have been more alert as well.

I don't know why I felt the need to weigh in with this. I hadn't thought about the guy in ages...

my two fastest cars were a 72 demon with a 340 magnum tricked out and a *gran torino* 429.......both were capable of being death on wheels.

If anyone is familiar with i77 going through southern Virginia...I took my demon into East river mountain tunnel doing 130 with the pedal floored.....it registered 150....I broke the speedo as I exited....was doing AT LEAST 165.....stupid fast car

It's a past we will never relive
