Nancy Packard wasnt surprised to receive an Easter floral bouquet from her sister but the discovery of a live hummingbird inside was a shock.
I heard something buzzing, Packard said. I thought it might have been a bee.
Instead, it was the hummingbird, trapped with its feet stuck to the tape on the cellophane packaging.
Packards son untangled the birds tiny feet, and they took it outside their Victoria home.
But it didnt fly away, it just sat there, she said.

(14,691 posts)looking down at something on the sidewalk. When I got close, I was shocked to see it was a hummingbird! Unfortunately I had to get back to work after a while - but some stayed there waiting for a rehabilitator to come get the little guy.

(495 posts)I have so many every year. Last spring I think we had 3 nests in our yard. They are spectacular!

(72,790 posts)We've put out a feeder the last few years. I think they start to visit in May. Has to get a bit warmer. They are such awesome creatures.

(22,675 posts)And replaced them this year with red trumpet vines and what should be a whole back yard full of staggered seasonal flowering bushes, vines and trees.
The bees love our Russian Sage bushes and feed on them all season long. Our dwarf maple trees, an entire row of honeysuckle and Rose of Sharon bushes attract all sorts of pollinators. The hummingbirds will have the new stuff to share with the butterflies, Black Swallowtail and Monarchs. There should be an assortment of flowers, lillies, dill, fuchsia, along with what's looking like no less than about 60 Showy Milkweed plants sprouting up.
And this is just on our one property. We have more varieties on that of my other family members and friends. All are herbicide and pesticide free zones.
