I've been averaging 50 hours a week at work for the last four years. For 2.5 of those years, I also went to school part time and finished my degree. My wife lost her job about a month ago and I've been trying to pick up as much overtime as I can. I've put in about 60 hours a week for the past month. My wife's unemployment hasn't kicked in yet, and there is a possibility that she won't get it due to the circumstances of her termination. She wasn't technically fired, but she was basically forced to quit due to a hostile work environment. Her bosses really gave her no choice.
I've been kicking around picking up part time work on the weekends, but the way I feel now that isn't going to happen. We're going to have to figure out something else. My wife is actively looking for a new full time job, but it's just not happening for her yet.

(149,740 posts)I am so sorry to hear this.
I wish I had any concrete suggestions, but I don't.
I AM loving your stories! I'm not done reading them yet, but there will be concrete things for me to say when I am. You've done an excellent job!

(10,418 posts)I think when I graduated from college this past December, I put the 80 hour weeks behind me. I just don't feel like I can do that anymore.

(13,661 posts)Sounds like your wife was "de-hired" - many places do that, unfortunately - make it so miserable you quit bc if they fire you they have to pay unemployment. And then the flip side is, some people (like someone my sister worked with) are purposefully awful so they are fired --- unless the employer is savvy enough to see that ploy. I am not even remotely suggesting your wife did that, though - just commenting on the many ways people can get screwed by where they work.
Have you ever published your writing? Worked on some sort of how-to about things you know about? You really do have an interesting voice, and I'm not suggesting you take on even more work, but self-help or how-to books can sell well if marketed properly on Amazon. Fiction can be a hard sell, but non fiction and instructional material can be easier.
Anyway, just a thought. Hang in there, you and your wife. It'll get better (I know whereof I speak, not just throwing out platitudes...)

(10,418 posts)I have written a book and had several copies of it printed. So far, I've sent out a few copies to trusted people for review. I've also got another idea for another book.
However, I don't know if my writing is marketable at this point. For the answer to that question, I've sent a copy of my book to an English professor I took a class from and who seemed to enjoy my creative writing. He was pleased to see the work and is in the process of checking it out.
