The plant is named pokeweed and has to be prepared just right or it is poison, literally.

American Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) is a large semi-succulent herbaceous perennial plant growing up to 10 feet (3 metres) in height. It is native to eastern North America, the Midwest, and the Gulf Coast, with more scattered populations in the far West. It is also known as Virginia poke,[1][2] American nightshade, cancer jalap, coakum, garget,[2] inkberry, pigeon berry,[1][2] pocan,[2] pokeroot,[1] pokeweed,[1] pokeberry,[1] redweed, scoke,[2] red ink plant and chui xu shang lu (in Chinese medicine).[1] Sometimes the plant is also referred to as poke sallet[3] (or polk salad).[4] Parts of this plant are highly toxic to livestock and humans, and it is considered a major pest by farmers. Nonetheless, some parts can be used as food or poison if properly prepared.

The plant has a large white taproot, green or red stems, and large, simple leaves. White flowers are followed by purple to almost black berries, which are a good food source for songbirds such as gray catbird, northern cardinal, brown thrasher, and northern mockingbird.

I left Polk County in 1972 and only return to visit my Mom.

I used to know a few of the Polk County deputies. Years ago we used to host the mounted units from down state when they came up in May for the annual memorial service for police killed in the line of duty. They haven't been here for years, though and I never stayed in contact with any of them.

Atheist suing Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd for disregarding separation of Church and State

POLK COUNTY, Fla. - A Polk County woman has filed a federal lawsuit against Sheriff Grady Judd, claiming he's failed to "respect the separation of Church and State" by arresting her several times on "frivolous criminal charges" because she is an atheist.

According to EllenBeth Wachs' attorney, Lawrence Walters, the Atheists of Florida member is the target of "gestapo" arrests, not because she is a criminal, but because she doesn't believe in God.

"This individual has been treated differently than anybody else would, merely because she is a vocal atheist and the Sheriff disagrees with her viewpoint," Walters said.

Wachs was also arrested for lewd and lascivious behavior after a child, playing basketball next door, allegedly overheard her moaning in her bedroom.

From the broadway play "The Fantasticks"

Well actually, it's a song about how wonderful gardening is because you know what will grow when you plant it. Unlike parenthood.
