'People you may know' at LinkedIn

(Sorry, I didn't think this was important enough for GD, and it's likely not humorous enough for Lounge.)

I got a message the other day from LinkedIn that there were new people in 'people you may know.' The first person was someone I responded to once in a Craigslist ad. They ran an advertisement of some kind, I emailed them, they replied, I wasn't further interested, but I remembered them because of their website. Apparently LinkedIn knows who you've communicated with at Craigslist.

Is this really the kind of world we want? Where big brother et al knows your every communique, but you don't know theirs?

1. I've grown more wary of all that stuff in the past year or so.

What bugs me most about it is that you start getting a bunch of spam & unwanted friend requests & stuff. I think big brother has been accessing all this kind of stuff for a long time. No, I don't like that either.

If my communications are essentially open, then it's fair only if everyone else's communications are open, specifically including Big Brother's.

2. At some time in the past, you allowed LinkedIn to access your contacts.

The cat is out of the bag now, it's not so much a big brother thing as a big business thing.

Not that big brother is far behind, it's not.

In either case, whether I did or not, this contact happened after that initial join and setup.

and then uses them to bait you. I dropped the LinkedIn fraudsters years ago. They suck.

But it was long enough ago, I'm not sure I recall every button I pushed.

Except for them taking my contacts and spamming me with fraud email bullshit. So I dropped them shit quick and told them exactly why. I'm doing well and fine without them.

I too would probably be mad about the third wife friend request (that's what I thought was humorous). We don't always want to know folks with whom we have strong disagreements or past harms, whether they are close relatives or not is irrelevant.

I usually delete them. There has to be a way to change the settings to opt out of those kinds of emails.

It's a contractor I only communicated with by phone, never email, yet LinkedIn knows I should know him.

my stbex's lawyer had viewed my profile. he is also in my contacts, so they wont let go of him.
now i have to look at their emails w/o downloading the content, because the guy's picture creeps me out.

same w fb. if i click on someone's post, they suggest them as friends. i look at a lot of things on fb out of morbid curiosity. then i am haunted by it.

yeah, big brother is here, and he is def a relative i am not interested in communicating with.

There are privacy settings so you can browse anonymously. I know it doesn't help you, since the lawyer doesn't either doesn't know he/she can browse anonymously or perhaps wants you to know he's examining you.

I'm wondering if this whole computer network thing is desirable. Perhaps eschewing networked technology is preferable from a peace of mind standpoint. So many "benefits," but so many finely nuanced "costs" as well.

i have a lot of testimonials on my linkedin that are very valuable to me, including a few from a client who has since passed on.
same w the fb page for my farm.

i just gave up the idea that i have an privacy long ago. my du posts are watched by my "friends" in the cave, including a local troll. in fact i have the honor of being the "DUmmy of the year".
i enjoying an occasional bit of trolling myself. easy to push the buttons of fools.

it is what it is i guess.

In that ignorance, what I'm getting from your post is adapt. That LinkedIn, perhaps like Facebook and other social media, are creating new possibilities that give meaning to our human condition.
