The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMet Senator Sanders tonight.
We were working in New York today and had to catch a late train back to Philadelphia(which was really late by 55 minutes).
I was walking out of the waiting area when I spotted Senator Sanders, with one aide, standing in the concourse, also waiting for a late train. Walked up to him, said "Good evening, Senator. I want to thank you and tell you that you've made this old left-wing, commie hippie fuck very happy. Good luck."
He smiled, shook my hand and I went to inquire about my train. On my way back, I pointed him out to the two Amtrak cops standing around and said to take good care of that old guy over there. "Why?" "That's Senator Bernie Sanders and he's running for President."
"Oh, thanks."
Bought some water and went back to the waiting area. There he was sitting near Mrs GoS, who had no idea who he was. I pointed him out, got out my iPhone and asked if he minded posing for a picture. "Not a problem."

After I sat back down, the Amtrak cops came over and introduced themselves and asked if he wanted to go to the Acela Lounge.

(9,126 posts)The guy is running for president, all over the news, and he's waiting for a train like the regular folk. That just blows my mind. Shows all the "Bernie is just an act" that it's for REAL. Thanks for sharing it. You're going to want to frame that one day.

In regard to presidential campaign, the Secret Service is authorized by law (18 United States Code § 3056) to protect:
Major presidential and vice presidential candidates and their spouses within 120 days of a general presidential election. As defined in statute, the term "major presidential and vice presidential candidates" means those individuals identified as such by the Secretary of Homeland Security after consultation with an advisory committee.
The Secret Service provides protection for major candidates, unless declined.

So it looks like Bernie's on his own for a good while. I would add I hope he doesn't make use of small planes.

(9,126 posts)I know he doesn't want to seem paranoid, but he's talking about changing the system. No one would fault him for trying to stay safe.

(15,480 posts)Free, unscheduled photo - no contract required? Not how HRC does it!
The contrast between Bernie and HRC couldn't be starker. Here's a reminder of the conditions HRC puts into her contracts for her lucrative speeches. This one refers to the $225,000 speech contract with the UNLV (University of Nevada, Las Vegas) Foundation
Clinton also agreed to a 30-minute photoline, which will take place before her remarks. But strict rules apply to it as well.
It is not to exceed 50 photos with up to 100 people, the contract reads.
It is understood and agreed that the photographer will take one (1) photo of each person or couple participating in the photoline. It is understood and agreed that the Sponsor will provide each of the photoline attendees with a copy of the photo to their personal use only. The Sponsor is also required to communicate to the photoline attendees that the photo is for private, personal use only and that the photo cannot be used in any way to imply any kind of endorsement of an entity, individual, product or service. Any use of the photo that suggests or implies any such endorsement is forbidden.
The Washington Post published details of a similar contract between Clinton and Buffalo University on Wednesday. Clinton is charging the school $275,000 for that event.

So if a HRC fan was able to get a photo, they would not be allowed to post it on DU.

Bernie can do these now while he's pretty unknown. As he draws bigger and bigger crowds with his message, and word spreads, once he becomes more recognizeable he is not likely to be able to remain as accessible.

(24,662 posts)to meet the Senator. Thanks for sharing, GOS.
I worked in DC during the late '60s to early 80's. One day while waiting at a traffic light, I realized Ted Kennedy was standing beside me. I said hello and we chatted for a minute about what a nice day it was. It is fun to meet them in ordinary situations.
