I thought it was a cat toy until I saw the blood.

(3,605 posts)We used to have a large black cat with a fluffy tail. He would not chase squirrels and would chase any cat who chased squirrels. He said, "Squirrels have fluffy tails. You should never chase anyone with a fluffy tail."
Besides, mice taste better.

(82,333 posts)One brought a chipmunk back in her mouth and dropped it, the other one went over and put it in her own mouth. I went over, the cat dropped it. I reached down to check on it and it ran up my arm across my shoulders, jumped down and ran away.
Scared the crap out of me. I hope it survives.

(87,012 posts)was friends with the squirrels in the yard/trees. They played tag with each other, she mourned when one died and would come in and tell me if there was a dead one anywhere on our block so I could go and bury it. They taught her to run full scream ahead on a hurricane fence rail and dash up a tree at lightning speed. But when she caught something, whether still alive or not, she would bring it in and set it down in front of the kitchen trash receptacle.
When she decided to stop killing things after she was attacked by an owl and recovered from the shock, she killed one junco and buried it, brought me out to show it to me and that was the end of her killing things outside. After that she only caught the occasional mouse who made the fatal error of coming in the house.
Still miss her after all these years.
Kitties who bring presents to their humans really do love their humans.

(1,005 posts)to the hunting impaired humans they love. Someone needs to hunt for them, so they don't starve.
We had a mama cat who would line up her kittens and demonstrate with a dead mouse the proper stalking, pouncing and killing techniques, and have them practice in turn. Then she would bring the dead mouse over to us and demonstrate all the techniques again in slow motion, just to make sure us slow humans would be able to grasp the basics. We would praise her as a great huntress and good mama kitty, then quietly dispose of the generous "gift".
