A dog's keen sense of smell reunited a long-lost cat with his owner.Shelly Colette was out for a walk with her dog, a border collie Labrador mix named Cash, in New Brunswick, Canada. When Colette and Cash passed by a storm drain, Cash stopped and "refused to move," The Star reported.
When Colette peered down the grate, she spotted a cat. It turns out his name was Ghost, and he had been missing for six weeks.
"I had never met Ghost, but I had seen the missing cat signs around town and I thought, 'That's Ghost,'" Colette said. She said it was clear that Cash "wanted to save this cat."
Colette called Ghost's owner, Izzy Francolini, who rushed over. Francolini then contacted city workers to take off the manhole cover, a job that required multiple sledgehammers.
Hours later, Ghost emerged and his owner took him home.
"I love that dog dearly," Francolini said.

(20,783 posts)Last night a friend told me her son-in-law had been taken by the Immigration Gestapo, leaving his kids and her daughter devastated. He'd been here for many years and was the family's primary wage earner. They don't know how they'll cope. They haven't got the money for a lawyer to help them resolve it quickly, though they are accessing what resources they can. In the mean time, it's a brutal, traumatic blow to the whole family.
And I was thinking "Damn, how did we as a species decide it's okay to treat each other like that? When did we decide it's okay to send uniformed thugs to break up peaceful families in the most devastating way in the name of 'rule of law'? What the hell is happening to us?"
I think we're DEvolving.
And our creatures are trying to show us a better way. "Hey, even if this critter is 'different' from me, he needs help. I'm the one here, so I'll step on up and help."
They better than us now.

She then got comfortable, hoping the four-year-old cat would eventually climb out. But she believes the banging sounds may have scared the orange tabby further into the drain, so she camped out on the street.
Someone came and gave me a blanket so I made a little blanket fort basically. Every so often friends and strangers came and went. A neighbour charged my phone for me. Two people brought me dinner. A lady gave me five bottles of water, said Francolini.
It was incredible. It was mind-blowing and heartwarming.
After six hours of waiting, there was no sign of Ghost, so she reluctantly left her post.
But about three hours later, she got a call from a friend saying they had passed by the manhole and could hear meowing.

(2,775 posts)Our kitty was lost in Santa Fe, NM last year for 3 weeks. I live in California. My daughter lives in Santa Fe and looked for him daily. Well after we'd all given up hope of ever seeing him again, someone spotted him and recognized him from our posters. They called, my daughter went to see if it were really he. We were ecstatic! So, I know just how that owner feels.
