Starblazers question (spoilers)

I wasn't a huge fan and I haven't seen the show in over three decades, but in the finale, didn't one of the heroes float off into space?

I seem to recall that scene sort of messing me up in my youth, but I can't remember if it was Starblazers or some other similar program.

Help me, geeks! You're my only hope!
