What the top hits from various years had been. And I found this:

Many of the older ones I actually learned in school (one of which is my home state's official song) or my dad played them on our old stereo.

(102,562 posts)I'm admittedly not a fan of the rap takeover in the later years (with a few exceptions)... Adele was a nice exception to the "end of melody" era.

I would, however, take issue with 1997. In that year, Elton John's Goodbye English Rose tribute to Princess Diana surpassed White Christmas to become the biggest-selling recording in music history.

And that two of my all-time favorite musical pieces were in there: the Blue Danube Waltz and Sing Sing Sing. 1812 Overture and Scott Joplin pieces are close behind.
