Music Appreciation
Related: About this forumI post a lot of acoustic music here. Much of why I do so -
is my desire to push back against the shittyness of what passes for country music now. Look - I get it. I do.
It's a big genre and there is room for light happy and poppy songs, making those songs is Taylor Swift's job after all.
But dammit, I'm sick of cookie cutter copies of poorly executed pop songs with a southern accent claiming to be Country.
3 chords and the truth is all you need.
Justin Knows this.

Be aware that mentioning Gram Parsons attracts Glamrock.

(323 posts)I was 9 months sober and went to a club in Maumee called "The Village Idiot," to see Justin Townes Earle play. I met him afterward and told him what the music of him and his dad meant to a couple of us in a rehab the prior year. He smiled, thanked me for telling him, and complimented my Chicago Cubs hat. He is a talented man, a great performer, and as nice of a person as I have ever met. Thank you for posting this.

(3,064 posts)I'm not quite ready to make that call now.
I did see him once way back in 2003 at La Zona Rosa in Austin. He was there to basically keep the guitars tuned and keep the cords out of the way.
If Steve hadn't called him bonehead I wouldn't have paid him any mind at all. The Dukes were backup; don't recall Justin so much as strumming a chord. Things do change.
La Zona Rosa was a great venue. Been gone for a few years unfortunately.

(2,130 posts)It's been nominated for a Grammy as the best folk album of the year. Every song was cowritten with a veteran or a veteran's spouse, as part of the Songwriting with Soldiers project. She listened to their stories and turned them into songs. And her cowriters get a percentage of the royalties. Check out this one for starters: https://www.bing.com/search?q=mary+gauthier+the+war+after+the+war&filters=ufn%3a%22mary+gauthier+the+war+after+the+war%22+sid%3a%221b0a8bbd-9297-50f3-aa64-ca345d366d39%22&autoplay=1&FORM=SNAPST

(2,618 posts)but according to their computers, country music as a MUSICAL style ceased to exist in the 80's. As you said, now it is all pop, light rock, and blues musically.
There was a contestant on American Idol a while back who proclaimed herself a country singer, and sang beautifully, because she wasn't trying to do her song with a phony twang.
Personally, I tell people I love a lot of music around country, folk, bluegrass, zydeco, Celtic; but not U.S. country.
