It's the melody from "From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come)". Written by Bruce Springsteen, but the classic version was performed by Dave Edmunds.
Sure loved Clarence Clemons. What beauty and soulfulness he put into his playing.
I got to express that to him once, in a very small way. Went to the third and final show of the E Street Band's three-night stand in St. Paul MN in 1984. It was the beginning of what would become the 18-month "Born in the USA" tour.
After the show, my friends wanted to hang around the ramp that sloped down to the loading dock, just to see the band when they exited for the buses. There was just a small smattering of people waiting there as the band walked up the ramp, to the sound of a bit of cheering and a few friendly call-outs.
There was a bit of a lull as Clemons passed below me. In a voice filled with warm respect, and not much louder than a speaking tone, I said to him,"Mr. Clemons, you are a beautiful man".
I don't know why those particular words spontaneously bubbled up, but they were heartfelt and sincere. And he heard them, and I'm sure he understood.
I'm glad I got the opportunity to express that sentiment. It's all too seldom that we let others know what the good things they do in life really mean to us.
