March Photo Contest 2014
I went with Graffiti/Street Art because it was the very close second choice for last month's contest. March will also include the photo contest for the Winter season beginning on March 1st. The Winter contest is being hosted by Johnny Noshoes, the Autumn contest winner. My Submission/Prelim times reflect an approximate time frame for the completion of the Winter contest. Which means dates could change. I'll notify everyone should that be the case.
Theme:Graffiti/Street Art
Submissions: March 16-19 (or until 30 entries)
Prelims: March 19-22. With Finals to follow.
* Contest will be blind submissions. All entries need to be emailed to me using DUMail. Don't forget to include a title for your entry.
* Only one entry per person.
* Please keep your entry no larger than 800 pixels in its longest dimension and under 300K in file size.
(If you need help posting a photograph or with image sizing, just ask. You can also find helpful info here.)
* Please do not use frames, except for a 10 pixel black frame to define white backgrounds.
* Post-processing is permitted in the same tradition as processing techniques of print photography.
If you have a scheduling conflict and need to submit your entry early, please do so.
Looking forward to the entries!
Thank you,
Solly Mack

(90,800 posts)The theme should yield colorful and creative images.

(90,800 posts)But do immortalize your work with a photo!
I hope you can find some. I really do. I guess many of us live where it's fairly common.
It was so close last month that I felt it the obvious choice for this month.

(18,219 posts)where I live, there is no graffiti. I haven't seen any in years. There are a few places where someone has painted their initials on a bridge trestle or something, but nothing you really notice anywhere.
I suppose that we are lucky.

(90,800 posts)other elements to their entry to avoid a straight-on and flat photo of graffiti.
Texture of subject should be considered. How the light plays on the subject. Angle/perspective of the entry. Look at the subject in a linear fashion perhaps. Encompass the structure as well as the art as a total landscape. Well done composition can bring a flat surface to life with a little thought. For us as the photographers it should be about the photo. I could ask that voters consider the all-around composition and creativity of the photo in their vote but some people will still see cool artwork and vote for that.
alfredo
(60,082 posts)they can focus on composition within the work.
Solly Mack
(90,800 posts)People interacting with the graffiti would be a good element. Like photographing someone taking a photo of some graffiti, for example.

(60,082 posts)Here's a door from a building that has been covered in art
and a detail to a community piece.
Solly Mack
(90,800 posts)other elements at play that work with the graffiti. The graffiti is the primary subject and a straight on shot covers that. A little pop never hurts though.
The door is interesting and more especially so with the words written by the door.
The other jumps out and draws the eye.

(90,800 posts)It's going to get cold here again by Monday. It's usually a lot warmer by March.
My winter birds are still hanging about and they're usually on their way to other lands by now.
I hope you get the shot you want. Stay warm!
alfredo
(60,082 posts)less sub zero temps.

(4,483 posts)It's going to be a challenge given the judging method, to separate the artist from the photographer.
I'd probably go with less artistic graffiti, more photo.
alfredo
(60,082 posts)the action. A traffic sign might add insight to the character's motives.
In your image the graffiti changes how we see the two men. Very good image.
Solly Mack
(90,800 posts)I think the theme has the potential for some great artistic shots.
I like the photo posted and to me is a great example of a combination of elements.

(31,415 posts)I've been playing with some photos...and looking through that gallery...and one of the
photos I like best in there incorporates the graffiti into the street setting, although the graffiti itself
isn't as interesting topically.

(22,381 posts)It was so obvious in the last poll that it would be a welcome subject.

(9,314 posts)We had one last week and some of the snow is still on the ground. We've experienced 50 degree drops in temperature over night and it's playing havoc with my back. *whine, whine*

Solly Mack
(90,800 posts)and please know you're both in my thoughts.
Still plenty of slots open in the March contest.
People have entered early but I just wanted to remind people and kick the thread.
ETA: That was weird. Double post without posting the whole thing. Which is why I deleted the other.
