Related: About this forumA tulip - and a story.
Nine or 10 years ago, HullBoss and I planted a bunch of bulbs, tulips and hyacinths mostly, in a bed alongside our house. The following spring some of them came up, not all, and the year after that only two broke the ground, and they never bloomed. Just a few pathetic leaves and then they'd die back. Year after year, the same thing. A few years ago, I decided maybe they weren't getting enough sunshine in that spot, so I dug them up in the fall and planted them in a sunnier place, deep like you're supposed to. Spring arrives and the transplanted bulbs don't sprout, BUT two plants come up where I know I had dug them up the previous fall. So I must have left a piece or something. They still didn't bloom though.
But this year, a miracle. We FINALLY got a tulip and she's beautiful. I don't know what's different, but there it is. Last year I got peony blooms on a plant that hadn't bloomed in years, and it looks like this year will be a repeat. Maybe the angle of the sun really is changing like the Native elders are saying.
Anyway, here's the tulip in its glory.

(46,436 posts)but this winter we had very little snow and above average temperatures. I actually lost several of my perennials because of the freeze-thaw-freeze thing and lack of snow cover. The winter before that, 2012-13, we had record snowfall. It's really gotten to the point where we don't know exactly what to expect from our seasons.
Spring was early this year, and very quick. Barely showing green one day, and full on summer three days later. This past week has been balmy, into the 70s, but it's supposed to rain starting tomorrow. If the El Nino develops, we'll continue to have a warm summer.
and thank you for telling about it.
Never thought about tulips in Alaska.
Enjoy!

(20,886 posts)I love the way you've framed it, and the background color and blur. That is a tulip worth waiting for.

Lovely shot too. I've never seen one that color mix before. I'm glad you will be getting your peonies this year.
Learning how to garden with these on-going climate changes is definitely going to be challenging.
