Well, I'm not too fond of those who hate my home.

Well, here at The Huffington Post we were shocked -- shocked -- to discover the results of a national poll by Public Policy Polling about the popularity of each state in the country. The most disliked state in the nation: California.
In fact, only five states in the country were in the negative territory, including Utah (24 percent of people polled found the state favorable and 27 percent found it unfavorable), Mississippi (22-28), New Jersey (25-32), Illinois (19-29) and California with a whopping 44 percent of those polled viewing the state unfavorably. Only 27 percent of those polled viewed California favorably, and 29 percent had no opinion. (See all of the results here.)
Perhaps to no one's surprise, California ranked lowest with Republicans (according to the poll results, they "absolutely hate" the state) and highest with Democrats and women. Hawaii was the most liked state, followed by Colorado, Tennessee, South Dakota and Virginia. And then every other state in the country, and THEN California.

(2,322 posts)...rub everyone's noses in our fine weather (yearly Rose Parade anyone? What's that but "Nah-nah! You're under snow and we're not!" , easy living (surfing, car culture, Beverly Hills), haute cuisine, and the fact that we get to see movie stars on a daily basis. Hey, I'd hate us, too if I didn't live here.
Luckily, we Californians are so self-absorbed that we don't notice or care what anyone else thinks of us. Hate away; we're happy and livin' the California dream.

(46,192 posts)California was only seen unfavorably by Whites (by a 28 point margin). All other racial groups saw California positively. Hispanic +16, African American +14 and "Other" +7. Democrats view California positively, while Independents and Republicans did not. I'll keep my interpretations to myself.

(3,128 posts)Having moved from Virginia to California, I would like to see ALL the right-wing nuts leave the state and be assured that no more would come here--even to visit. Then, perhaps, we could get some sanity back into the government and support education and renewable energy, etc.

But not surprised that South Dakota is on the most liked. The upper midwest, whatever it is about them, seem to have their shit together. From Nebraska through the Dakotas and Montana/Wyoming, they must have great people, great political leaders, or both. Low unemployment, job growth, budget surpluses, low crime rate, home prices didn't take nearly the hit the rest of the U.S. did. And with their oil production now, they could practically break off from the rest of the sinking U.S. and probably survive. Is there something they have that the rest of the states don't have? Or something the rest of the states have that they don't have?
This article is about a year old, but it probably still holds true. Makes an argument that there's probably no better place to live right now than North Dakota: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/pf_article_112420.html

(2,322 posts)And no, I'm not entirely joking. It's like New York got forgiven for taking a bullet for the U.S.
Besides, California's easier. No one cares if Broadway actors are gay, liberal and/or Jewish because no one goes to plays outside of New Yorkers. Broadway has no political power. But California has all those gay, liberal and Jewish movie stars and moguls, and it is rich and powerful. Scary, right?
And, once again, I'm not entirely joking. Since Hollywood began, U.S. citizens have loved to hate it.

discharged from the military but went back to VA because that's where my
girlfriend was (didn't work out). In retrospect I should have stayed in SF.
I was there last summer looking at housing and found several cities
I would love to live in. (near Tahoe and/or north of SF)

Lots of folks back East, they say, is leavin' home every day,
Beatin' the hot old dusty way to the California line.
'Cross the desert sands they roll, gettin' out of that old dust bowl,
They think they're goin' to a sugar bowl, but here's what they find
Now, the police at the port of entry say,
"You're number fourteen thousand for today."
Oh, if you ain't got the do re mi, folks, you ain't got the do re mi,
Why, you better go back to beautiful Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee.
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see;
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi.
You want to buy you a home or a farm, that can't deal nobody harm,
Or take your vacation by the mountains or sea.
Don't swap your old cow for a car, you better stay right where you are,
Better take this little tip from me.
'Cause I look through the want ads every day
But the headlines on the papers always say:
If you ain't got the do re mi, boys, you ain't got the do re mi,
Why, you better go back to beautiful Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee.
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see;
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi.

About California I've never been there but I've read so many books set there I feel almost like I have. I think California would be a beautiful state to visit.

(11,181 posts)It costs them money to come visit. They love it, but hate Californians, because we have it all the time. Then they do visit and are left wondering "Now where do we go?" Hawaii, for the more adventurous, maybe.
