Bill would mandate Bible study classes in public high schools

Rep. Kim Daniels, a Jacksonville Democrat known for championing legislation that brings religion into public schools, filed legislation Tuesday mandating high school-level Bible study electives.

That is, her bill (HB 195) would require — rather than just permit, as is the case now — high schools to offer an “objective study of religion.”

Such courses include:

— “A course on the Hebrew Scriptures and Old Testament…”

— “A course on the New Testament…,” and

— “A course on the Hebrew Scriptures, the Old Testament of the Bible, and the New Testament of the Bible.”

They would still be electives: If the bill passes, however, the state’s public schools would have to offer these, but no one student would be required to take them.

I just saw this article in the Florida Times-Union. Jacksonville might need to make some changes.

Once again, state Rep. Kimberly Daniels is willing to admit she broke the law.

Daniels, a Jacksonville Democrat who has repeatedly faced ethics and elections complaints during her eight years in politics, filed an agreement recently with the state that she would confess to filing false financial disclosures. In return, the agreement says, the commission should refer the case to House Speaker Jose Oliva for any further action.

The statewide ethics commission will meet Jan. 25 to decide whether or not to accept this deal. Oliva and Daniels both did not return a request for comment Wednesday.

Daniels has agreed to admit she filed inaccurate disclosures in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Daniels is perhaps the most conservative Democrat in the Legislature and has been a friend to Republicans in her anti-abortion advocacy and support for religious liberty. She authored a law that guaranteed students could express religious views at school, including by praying before, during and after class. Her most recent bill would require every public school to offer a class on the “objective study of the Bible.”

whisper it to yourself. Religion is private. Find a closet or quiet place and pray away kids.

Democrat? That’s a surprise to me. This should not happen in public schools, period! Are we becoming a fascist, theocratic society? 😡

Be careful what you wish for—you may get it. I think the first guest lecturer should be Bill Maher.

Florida's schools are already underfunded and a mandate to provide additional elective courses can only make things worse. Charter school lovers DeSantis and Corcoran will surely make Florida's public education financing challenges worse. Kim Daniels is a disgrace.

I would not object if it were a study of various religions - but to require that schools offer a course - even if its optional - that only covers one religion should be unconstitutional.

I will call my local state representatives tomorrow about this.
