Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center

For 10,000 years the indigenous people occupied the lands on what we now call the Eastern Shore. In 1609, John Smith, discovered them, and the Europeans so-named three tribes, Choptank, Nanticoke and Pocomoke. These are also the names of rivers (among others) that surround the shores and feed into the Chesapeake Bay. In the 1750’s, Harriet Tubman’s grandmother Modesty, was believed captured on the West Coast of Africa and brought to Cambridge at LongWharf on the Choptank River. In present day these tribes formed the Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians. Their current chief is a woman. Never forget the people who occupied and protected these lands first! Today for Women’s History Month, we honor, Chief Donna “Wolf Mother” Abbott.
