Daniel Ellsberg, the Pentagon Papers leaker, had roots in metro Detroit, Cranbrook Schools



(Detroit Free Press) The Huntington Woods Peace Group's meeting was online, partly because it was during the pandemic in 2020 — but also, to make it easier for their 89-year-old speaker, Daniel Ellsberg, to attend.

The national figure was a household name in the early 1970s for leaking the Pentagon Papers, a secret history of damning revelations leading up to the Vietnam War. He was later portrayed by an actor in a big-budget movie about what he did.



During the meeting, he told his audience he was delighted to be back in Michigan, at least virtually.

"We were thrilled to have him," Linda Ashley, the group's co-chairwoman recalled Saturday, just a day after Ellsberg died in his Kensington, California home of pancreatic cancer at 92. "Our take away was: How amazing it was he could be so engaging at that point in his life? He was so young-seeming." ..................(more)
