Infighting pesters Michigan GOP: It's Trump supporters vs. everybody

Mackinac Island — A gathering of Republicans in northern Michigan over the weekend spotlighted a state political party that's becoming increasingly hostile to those who disagree with its approach and its leaders' unproven claims the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump.

Hundreds of Michigan GOP supporters convened on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Grand Hotel for the 35th biennial Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference. Two years ago, the event focused on calls for unity ahead of the 2022 race for governor.

But this year, before the 2024 presidential election, the party's new chairwoman, Kristina Karamo, told her critics to "pound sand." Another speaker, state Rep. Neil Friske, R-Charlevoix, said Republicans either stood with 16 individuals who signed a false certificate saying Trump won in 2020, resulting in criminal charges, or they stood with Democrats.

Bree Moeggenberg, a member of the Michigan Republican Party's state committee, carried petitions inside the Grand Hotel over the weekend, requesting the removal of [MIGOP general counsel] Hartman. In an email to other Republicans on Saturday, Moeggenberg described the conference as a "historic flop." Meanwhile, Jeff Fuss, a Republican from Ottawa County, called on Karamo, a former podcast host and educator, to resign. Fuss contended the state party was functionally bankrupt.
