Polarizing Michigan GOP chair's future in jeopardy as momentum builds to oust her

Published: Dec. 04, 2023, 11:09 a.m.

By Simon Schuster

Michigan Republican Party chair Kristina Karamo could be in trouble. There’s a growing likelihood Karamo could be removed as chair of the party less than a year into her tenure after a majority of the party’s state committee skipped a Saturday meeting she convened to attend one organized by a group of discontented party leaders.

With only a minority of the state committee present for the chair’s virtual meeting – a planned protest had prompted their in-person venue to cancel – Karamo’s meeting couldn’t achieve the quorum required to conduct business.

Instead, a majority of the state committee gathered in Commerce Township without Karamo, who declined an invitation to attend their in-person alternative. It was a watershed moment for Karamo’s detractors, who say it shows they’ve gained the momentum.

The split is the result of long-simmering dissatisfaction with Karamo’s leadership as the party limps toward a crucial presidential election year in a highly-competitive state with meager fundraising and perpetual infighting. Karamo didn’t return an interview request from MLive.

"Because God told her to stop abortions" even though the Michigan Secretary of State has nothing to do with abortions. She's certifiable yet the MIGOP endorsed her race and voted her Chair of the MIGOP.

I’d much rather have her continue to drag the state GOP down. She’s pathetically inept at chairing the state party.
