Strickland:"..President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and our partys platform"
Get out of politics, Ted
Strickland, who chaired the convention's platform drafting committee, had taken the stage earlier Wednesday to add language asserting faith in God and recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The Associated Press and others reported that Obama, after facing backlash over the initial exclusions, requested the amendments. A voice vote exposed deep division on the matter.
Strickland became the face of the messy floor fight.
"As an ordained United Methodist minister, I am here to attest and affirm that our faith and belief in God is central to the American story and informs the values we've expressed in our party's platform," Strickland as he introduced the amendments. "In addition, President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and our party's platform should as well."
Thursday morning, Strickland sidestepped questions about his views on the Israel language.
"I'm not going to share that," he said. "It would be inappropriate."
