lines aren't so long thus increasing likelyhood of voting. It can speed up the process. It increases voting opportunity. It allows people to bank their votes early. It allows campaigns to start turnout strategies early to bank definite votes for their candidates early.
It increases voter participation. There are MANY reasons for it.

I'm an observer for the state and county Democratic party for the county I work in, so I've been at the BOE large portions of two days. There has been a steady flow of people from the time the BOE opens its doors at 8:00 AM until around a half hour before it closes. Today (the last day to register to vote) was about 30% heavier than the first day. The pollworkers said it was lighter on Friday, but that Tuesday-Thursday and today were heavier than any they saw last year. Lots of new registrations, as well.
