everyone was just registered to vote without any party designation. You went to the polls for primaries and asked for either the Republican or the Democrat ballot. Independents would have the same right to vote in the primaries as party faithfuls. That was the up side to it.

The down side was that the other party could mess with the primary by voting for the least likely to win candidate on the other party's ballot. But that sword cut both ways.

I liked this much better than what we have here, since I do believe that independents have a stake in the outcome. It also could help with some of the areas where there is only one party with any candidates and primaries are where the win occurs.
