With $1 billion deficit, Repubs in legislature still refusing to enact any gas extraction tax

The budget deadline is the end of June, with no resolution in sight.

According to the link, the Repubs in the legislature are refusing to enact any type of severance tax on natural gas. They are holding this position even though there is a billion deficit that needs to be closed, and there is a desperate need for more public school funding.

While there is an impact fee, it is structured so that the fees will actually be going down while production increases. The expectation had been that existing impact fees to affected local governments would be continued, but that those amounts could be credited towards the severance tax that was levied.

PA. is the only state with a natural gas industry that does not charge an extraction tax.
