Mom swung whip at children inside Waffle House, police say

Officers arrested a woman after they said she appeared to be heavily intoxicated and was physically abusing her two children early Sunday morning at a Waffle House in South Nashville.

According to the arrest affidavit, officers with the Metro Nashville Police Department were dispatched to the Waffle House at 14991 Old Hickory Blvd around 4 a.m. on Sunday for reports of a woman abusing her children.

Officers arrived and found 41-year-old Chrystal Fennell with her two children, ages 5 and 6. Witnesses at the restaurant told officers that Fennell arrived in a white Chevrolet Suburban with her children and while inside, they observed her pushing the children and swinging a whip at them.

Officers searched Fennell’s belongings and found a multi-lashed whip, the affidavit states. They attempted to speak with her about what happened but reported she was acting erratically and responding to their questions in a non-sensical manner. She also repeatedly showed signs of being under the influence of cocaine or methamphetamine as she was constantly fidgeting, acting paranoid, and speaking to people who were not there, police said.
