Governor needs to stay in Texas, tend to state business

It has been disappointing to learn that Gov. Rick Perry has plans to continue traveling the country to promote the fiscal and state-sovereignty issues he highlighted in his presidential campaign.

There are several troubling aspects that the governor is failing to consider, and the people of Texas will be shortchanged if he carries through with his out-of-state travel plans. Texas loses a full-time governor, has to pay for his security and has to deal with Perry’s misguided assumption that he still has something to offer on a national level.

First, we think Texas deserves a full-time governor if the national interest has waned. In our opinion, Perry certainly fits this category. He entered the presidential race as a frontrunner but quickly fell to a mere blip on the national scene.

He left the presidential race Jan. 19, after stumbling with uninspiring debate performances that sank his once-soaring candidacy. We find it amusing Perry recently sat for interviews with Texas media in his Capitol office after obviously neglecting his relationship with the press by refusing to meet with editorial boards during his campaign for governor and before leaping into the presidential race.

Some in Perry’s camp claim he will consider another run for governor and another presidential bid in 2016. This newspaper already is on the record that Texas needs a different conservative leading the state come January 2015.

Voters should not forget what a failure Perry is. They've seen him under a microscope in the national spot light. Something they never got in Texas because our media is crumbling. Perry got all kinds of passes in the Texas media.

At this point, we doubt that many want to hear Texas’ economic success story from Perry. A Blum & Weprin Associates Inc. poll, conducted right after he dropped out of the presidential race, found a combined 48 percent of registered voters said Perry’s presidential run had made Texas’ image either a little or a lot worse. The Blum & Weprin poll found 56 percent of registered voters in Texas didn’t think Perry should run for re-election.

This sitting ineffective corrupt Governor should resign and let someone willing to work on Texas problems for real take the leadership role.
