What was AP thinking? - Photos of Cruz are in poor taste

Photos: Charlie Neibergall

A picture of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, a candidate for the Republican nomination for president, is making the social media rounds and creating quite the discussion.

The picture is of Cruz speaking at a “Celebrate the 2nd Amendment Event” at the CrossRoads Shooting Sports in Johnston, Iowa. In the background there is a picture of a gun, and based on where the photographer was standing and focusing, it appears the gun is pointed right at Cruz’s forehead.

The picture is in horrible taste. In fact, there are two versions that the AP moved that leads us to wonder what were they thinking. Conservatives are right to ask if this would have happened with a Democrat. We think not. And had this happened to an African-American, we wonder if cries of racism would have been heard. We think so.

Few will call for the AP to explain their actions because Cruz is Hispanic. There has been some explanation from the Associated Press about the picture itself, but it will do little to think of a left-wing bias.

The editors at the Midland Reporter-Telegram don't take into account that Cruz is responsible for the photo-op. I don't think we have to worry about this happening to a Democrat or an African-American because the likelihood that they would place themselves in this situation are minute.

6. Although I'm glad that Cruz renounced his Canadian citizenship,

I'm not happy that the USA has him.

I just figure that luck was on Canada's side, in this case.

This puts me in an awkward position w.r.t. DU'ers who want to send him back to Canada, since we wouldn't accept him unless he got down on bended knees and begged - and there are plenty of other people in line ahead of him.

8. It looks like they're done with coloring (see those crayons and Dora books?)

they've had their little snack (paper plates and plastic cups), and then they're going to hear from the lunatic, after which they'll have a nice lie-down and nap on some floor mats with their own blankets and pillows.

It's kindergarten for white male adults!!! At least that's what it looks like to me...

9. I can't recall any picture or statement of Ted Cruz

that was NOT in bad taste by virtue of the fact that it is, well, a picture or statement of
Ted Cruz. I always feel slimy just looking at his picture and I try my best to avoid doing so.

4. Given the venue, i suppose it was difficult

to find any angle in that room where there wasn't a gun pointing at him.

That's what you get when you try for the gun crowd, no crowd, just guns.

7. AP was thinking "This idiot PICKED this venue? What a moron!!"

You can't photograph what isn't there, after all.

What was his PUBLICIST thinking? Did no one research the venue? Good advance work is all about how things are going to be framed, how every image will look. Those pictures of guns on the wall were a pictorial accident waiting to happen.

10. Getting Cruz in a picture with the crayons would have been better

The only writing instruments visible is a bag of crayons. That is about the speed of the Cruz campaign.
