Irving motorcycle cop nearly hit by hit-and-run driver who was texting

An Irving police officer was nearly hit Tuesday on State Highway 183 when a car slammed into his motorcycle.

The officer was conducting a traffic stop on westbound Highway 183 near Belt Line Road shortly after noon when another vehicle hit the motorcycle and sped off.

The driver who was initially pulled over went after the vehicle and officers apprehended the hit-and-run suspect in front of La Quinta Inn and Suites near Esters Road.

The driver told officers that he was texting when he veered off the road, said Officer James McClellan, a department spokesman. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
