Child's body recovered from Rio Grande after raft capsizes, agent makes daring rescue of others
The body of a child was recovered from the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass along the Texas-Mexico border Wednesday after a raft carrying migrants capsized.
Three people remain missing, according to a news release by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
What were dealing with now is senseless tragedy, said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Raul L. Ortiz. The men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol have been doing everything in their power to prevent incidents like this. And yet, callous smugglers continue to imperil the lives of migrants for financial gain.
At about 9:45 p.m, Wednesday, May 1, 2019, U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Eagle Pass South Station detained a man on charges he illegally entered the United States. While in detention, the man told agents his wife and two sons (10-months-old and 6-years-old), and a 7-year-old nephew were swept into the Rio Grande after the rubber raft they were on capsized.
