Rain, avalanches, mudslides coming down, possible 'lowland snow' ahead
The National Weather Service has put it all together in its late Monday afternoon forecast: Heavy rain in the lowlands, which will bring "the threat of mudslides," plus an up-and-down snow level and "high avalanche danger" in the mountains.
The understatement summing it up: "Unsettled."
If you plan to cross the Cascades, "Dangerous travel due to snow will continue over the mountain passes into tonight." The Washington State Department of Transportation closed Steven's Pass on U.S. 2 between the summit and Coles Corner Monday night due to adverse weather conditions. The road will be re-evaluated on Tuesday morning to determine if it will re-open.
How long will the poor weather conditions last? the Weather Service says snow levels will "gradually rise" above pass levels on Tuesday. But don't count on it: "Heavy snow could linger into portions of the Cascades through tomorrow."
