Ferry lines return to Whidbey Island over Mother's Day Weekend

LANGLEY -- Two-hour Whidbey Island ferry lines returned for Mothers Day, a pandemic pushed aside on a weekend that is often busier than Memorial Day or Labor Day.

Staying home was asking just a little too much with temperatures in the 80s. But COVID-19 was felt, and social distancing had a familiar enforcer -- the great blue heron on Double Bluff Beach.

Brian McKenna, a longtime restauranteur, helped with the rush at local pizza restaurant's takeout, and had this take on the Mothers Day pandemic:

"Oh yes, the Stay Home request has been breached but I think it's mainly folks with summer/weekend places here. I'd say 80% were masked. We here in Langley have a new directive from our mayor that all folks in the 'core of town' (wear masks)."
