New images of the southern resident orca calf released

On Friday the world got a bit of good news, for once: There was a new baby orca.

The southern resident L-pod apparently welcomed a new calf sometime recently, who appears to be the baby of L77. The new calf has been designated L124, the third calf that L77 has had. Her first was born in 2010 and died the same year, the second-known calf is L119, a female born in 2012.

So far, L124's sex is unknown.

Researchers at the Center for Whale Research are cautiously welcoming L124 into the fold. Though L124's birth brings the southern resident killer whale population to 75, approximately 40 percent of newborn calves do not survive their first few years.
