He was a Jack, er, Linus of all trades. He built boats, did all kinds of carpentry and woodworking, he loved fishing, and he was a really good cook.

I have letters he sent me over the years in his elegant penmanship. All of them included a recipe he liked, either handwritten or clipped from newspapers and magazines, always with little notes and helpful hints, and why he thought I’d like it. We were penpals since I was in 6th grade (thank you again, Mrs. Eisenhower, of blessed memory; you were my best and favorite teacher.)

I got my last letter from Grandpa Linus when I was in college. There was a handwritten recipe.
A week later I was called home because he had a terrible stroke. I met my parents at the hospital, and while they were meeting with his doctor, I was holding his hand and telling him how much I loved him. He passed peacefully. He’s a precious part of who I am to this day.

Minocqua. Thank you for bringing me these sweet memories, WiVoter.
I hope the beer is delicious!
