Local Government upgrading my system to 8.1 pro...need help

I see they only come with rudimentary programs. I've used Works for years to build simple databases that allow me to cut or clip data and put it in an email. I understand that will all go away using 8.1 so I've been running around looking for a program that would work with MS works. I found a new install of Microsoft works 9 which is compatible it says will work with 8.1. I can stand some of the new crap. I did find my old HP laser printer will work. Any ideas?

Most of my databases are built using info in 18th century documents that I use regularly.

if it installs, and I hear it does, then you're OK.

I used to use Works on my old XP machine because it tended to do just enough for most things and was less of a hassle than WordPerfect, which I used for serious stuff. But, it had its own file formats which made things tricky at times.

There's other free suites like Kingsoft that you might find useful. And, of course there's open Office and Libre Office, but they're pretty big and complex.
