http://www.theintelligencer.net/page/content.detail/id/659567/Hillary-Clinton-to-Travel-Countr---.htmlWhile some on DU were chortling about Logan's apparent blackballing of a Hillary visit, there are apparently places where she IS welcome in WVA. And The Big Dawg will be campaigning in the infamous Logan next Sunday. So yes, her commitment to the area is a serious one.
The front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination is scheduled to visit Ashland, Kentucky, and Williamson, West Virginia, on Monday. She will visit West Virginia and Ohio on Tuesday, but details of those stops are not yet available.
The campaign said the former president will campaign in Charleston and Logan on Sunday. Details were not available Friday.
In a news release, the campaign said Hillary Clinton will discuss her plans to raise incomes for people in overlooked or underserved communities. The Appalachian region has been economically devastated by the decline in the coal industry.
It appears that her strongest primary opponent in WVA may not be Bernie, however, but rather Keith Judd. More from the link:
... President Barack Obama ... couldn't stop Judd from winning 41 percent of the state's primary vote four years ago.
Judd was still behind bars then, and many West Virginia voters had no idea who he was, but they were determined to rebuke Obama, whose clean air regulations remain deeply unpopular in the coal-producing state.
"You really don't expect to get that many votes when you're sitting in a prison cell," Judd told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
Of course, there are at least some WVA voters who like Hillary. They include the current WVA governor who plans to endorse Hillary. He's also a SD.
Tomblin noted, Although I remain concerned about some of Secretary Clintons positions on fossil fuels, I believe she is the best choice to unite the Democratic Party and, after being elected president in November, our country. I have had discussions with former President Bill Clinton and representatives from Secretary Clintons campaign and believe Hillary Clinton is committed to working with us to diversify West Virginias economy while continuing to find ways to use our abundant coal and natural gas to power the nation.

(3,089 posts)I recall that Jesse Jackson did quite well with these families when he ran for office in the 80's. They are often forgotten and need lots of help. The GOP just writes them off as mining fodder. They need the same kind of infusion of hope and resources that inner cities get. The next huge problem facing them is WATER...clean and accessible.

(32,623 posts)That's not far from Matewan where my mom grew up. We visited every summer for years. Williamson was the closest "city".
There was a huge scandal there with the sheriff within the last couple of years but I don't remember the details.
I'm glad she's going. There are some good people there.

For any political candidate to dismiss any region simply because that region has not voted for that candidate is unacceptable, IMO. WVA is not necessarily Hillary country, but she is still working for every possible vote everywhere and takes nothing for granted.
The plight of the appalachian poor resonates with her whether she resonates with them or not.
