Hillary Clinton
Related: About this forumMy daughter - first-time voter, Sanders supporter til now - is voting for HRC
Interesting.
She brought up the subject. Wanted to know what Hillary's plans were for college kids. Wanted to know her stance on rape and bullying women. "I can go to Bernie's website and here it is on one page. What does Hillary say?"
"Could be that those issues take more than a page," said I.
So, we went into dueling iPads, checking out Hillary's YUGE Wiki entry, her campaign website etc. After 20 minutes of discussion - which I'm sure included my daughter's first honest examination of Hillary's record - she announced that she had found the answers she was looking for, and that her opinion of Hillary had changed.
"She's doing what I want to hear a candidate is doing."
The truth will out. One more vote for Hill on June 7.

(24,401 posts)"Hillary laughed at a 12-year-old rape victim and defended her attacker."
Well, our first stop was Snopes, which debunked the idea that Hillary laughed at this child. It also pointed out that Hillary asked to be excused from defending the guy, said she believed he was guilty and ended up getting a plea bargain which is what a lawyer is supposed to do, ie: do the best for their client within the confines of the law.
Further surfing took us to other articles from reputable sources that put a very suspect light on the source she had seen. To her credit, my daughter understood beforehand that lawyers are not supposed to let their personal feelings lead them to doing a poor job for their client. I don't think my daughter knew that Hillary asked to be excused from the case, or that she said the guy was guilty. She understood completely that once Hillary was on the case, she ethically had to do the best she could for her client, even a rapist.
That had a big effect on her view of Hillary.

(298,139 posts)My son is a BS fan.. but thinks Hillary is going to win(that was back when it wasn't quite as determined as it is now) and has no problem voting for her in November. He actually cares about this Planet of ours.
I keep hoping he'll have a revelation like your daughter's or an epiphany like some who realize what kind of scam he's still running!
I remember when I was younger.. I proudly pronounced I was an Indie.. I was Independent! Until I found out what the parties really represented and then I joined up @ the Dem

(11,649 posts)young to vote. back then you had to be 21. i just turned 19 when JFK ran. i wanted so much to vote for him. of course then we had the viet nam war. i loved eugene mccarthy but he didn't not become the nominee. i was horrified when nixon won in '68 -- then again in '72. then came watergate -- revenge. i was unemployed at the time and was glued to the tv during the hearings.
back in the 60s we had assasinations -- JFK, MLK, RFK.
i learned more about politics in the last 10 years -- being on DU and watching MSNBC.

I was 19 when JFK was assassinated.. I was driving in Phoenix on my way to Tempe when I heard it on the radio.. I had to pull over I was crying so hard, and in shock.
I didn't pay much attention to politics after that until the 2000 election.. I got my computer in 2002 so I could get on DU.. I had read about it in The Nation magazine I has picked up @ a newsstand in NYC.. on New Years Day 2001.
I learned about the history of all the political happenings I had missed.. with DU as a starting point, too. Not from the CTs but the reality based community.
The CTs are still going strong.. but here we are getting ready to nominate our first female candidate for the Democratic POTUS.. it's been a phenomenal ride!

the subway was empty going home that night -- i think people went home early. stopped at my grandma's to see my son -- then went home. i was supposed to visit my husband in prison the next day. i called his mom and asked her to sleep at my house because i didn't want to be alone. i don't think i slept -- just cried the whole night.
i split with my first husband in early '67 -- one of my first boyfriends had been in viet nam. met my second husband in '70. everything was about viet nam back then. even my young son said they talked about it in school.
moved to phoenix in late '89 and came down with CFS/ME. i couldn't work so i took more of an interest in politics.
i started posting on DU in 10/05 under a different name.

(24,401 posts)school and my mom giving us the sad news.
I am in the minority of Americans who believe Oswald acted alone in killing JFK. I base that on decades of interest in the case that reached a final determination when I read Bugliosi's Reclaiming History (I recommend it if you have a month to spare...it's a mammoth tome).
Most Americans believe the conspiracy theories about the case, which is unfortunate on many levels. First, because to believe thus, one must ignore the mountains of scientific evidence that confirm Oswald's guilt as the lone gunman. And second, a simple murder case has spawned a huge distrust in our government and has given license to all sorts of crazy ideas to flourish in our tabloid-driven reality. Much of Sanders appeal - his "us v them, secret powers are afoot to destroy your life" mantra - couldn't exist were not the electorate pre-disposed to believing in wide-ranging conspiracies that find their genesis in the myths surrounding the JFK killing.
I firmly believe that until the JFK myths are put to bed, our citizens will continue to be susceptible to the wildest ideas imaginable. And that will continue to fuel the Trumps and Sanders of the world, while more-reasonable people and their reasonable ideas are attacked as being "establishment propaganda" designed solely to divert people's attention from the evil lurking behind their doors.

(11,646 posts)...and he will support Hillary because getting Dems elected is important for our nation. He is aware that not all Bernie fans will be so rational about the failure of their candidate to win the nomination.
Anger causes people to act irrationally, unfortunately, and blaming the DNC and "the Clinton machine" is not healthy.
My son is a member of Young Democrats and the whole time he supported Bernie he refused to bash Hillary because he knew that, as a Democrat, he would have to support the nominee. It was obvious that it was a contest and that Bernie might not win, but he said, "Bernie has added so much to the discussion" and so I leave it at that and do not respond with how his lies and other negativity has drowned that out. I hope my son can influence others to look at the bigger picture--the one over Bernie's shoulder past him--Congress, the Supreme Court, state governments, the Democrat Party, etc. Bernie dropped the ball in all these places.
Bottom line is that it will be up to us Hillary supporters to help young people that haven't already gotten a clue to get one, and vote a Dem ticket in November. It looks like Bernie won't step up. He used young people and now he refuses to take responsibility.
You and I both know our sons won't regret supporting Hillary Clinton--ever!

Yeah, Big Shocker.. it does look like burnie won't step up to undo the damage he's done. Far be it from him to help out the country.. it's all about his enormous ego.
No wonder too many fans act the way they do.
Excellent point.. we know our sons won't regret voting for Hillary! I feel like the truth about BS will come out when everything is sorted out.. he can't hide it forever.
Aloha, pandr!
I think much of the inside stories of the data-breach, lawsuits, and other shenanigans will be outed. We will see what stuff his campaign was up to, and who directed what. People will talk.
Aloha back!

(3,733 posts)But they're not BoB neither dislikes Hillary.
Bernie did very well with younger voters and my younger voters liked him.
They do realize he's not going to win and we even talked about that last year.
I told them that it was very unlikely that Bernie had a real shot
at the nomination but that primaries were a great place to raise issues
They are now 4 square behind Hillary.
There wasn't even any real disappointment of their part
their attitude was they liked Bernie but he didn't win and HIllary is really good too
And Trump is nuts.

(14,564 posts)not once has the candidate I voted for won the primary. Maybe my 1st vote for HRC, will break my streak?
Not once have I ever considered stomping my feet because my candidate didn't win and say I wouldn't vote for the D candidate at all. Elections have consequences and I am not willing to live under evangelical republican rule.

(34,543 posts)And both of you researching simultaneously. That is the way to convince an intelligent and fair minded child.
We are lucky to live in an age where doing this research takes far less time and gives us access to so much more info than in the past. Of course the other side of that is that FALSEHOODS and innuendo get spread so much more quickly. And many people will not do the work to determine whether they have been misinformed.

Obviously, you've taught her to seek the facts about issues for herself. That's awesome.
Obviously, you and she have a relationship that allows you to discuss these issues. That's awesome.
The fact that she chose Hillary is not only awesome, but it shows maturity and wisdom.
