Chuck Todd just said something on Hardball that I have been thinking for quite a while

and have read several online articles about. He said that the Trump "phenomenon" may have some of its roots in Republican voters anger at the GOP for not delivering on promises, "reality show" culture etc. But Todd said he also believes much of it is driven by racist hatred of President Obama and sexism against Hillary. It pains me to say that I believe he is correct.

Not every Trump voter is a racist or sexist, but every racist and sexist is a Trump voter.

I mean...who else would support Trump? The whole idea that this is some kind of anti-establishment movement has always ignored the much simpler answer - he's tapping into bigotry and ignorance.

I watched a segment online of Morning Joe with Rob Reiner on. When Rob said straight out that there are a lot of racists who support Trump, they all acted shocked and defensive. The look on Mika's face was priceless, a mixture of horror that Reiner had said that out loud, and shock that they might have to discuss it seriously.

Somehow I am always surprised by the media complicity regarding the manufactured outrage of Whites and either the denial of racism (playing the race card) or claims of racism against Whites. (Black cadets salute).

I think America is pretty fucking awesome. It has its flaws. Let's fix it. But great again? Spare me the drama. I can see why Bernie supporters are drawn to the flickering flame.

"But Todd said he also believes much of it is driven by racist hatred of President Obama and sexism against Hillary"

One reason why black American women tend to be the most socially and politically active is because they are women and they are black. Sexism (misogyny) and racism are a sad reality.

When Obama first announced his candidacy in 2007, it was black women who were the most reluctant to support him, not because they didn't think he was qualified, but because they feared for his life. And of course, he did receive the most death threats of any candidate in history.

I can't stand Todd, but he is one of very few who is being honest about what's driving Trump support AS WELL AS anti-Hillary and anti-Obama hatred on the Sanders side. A lot of people will disagree with me about the latter point, but I believe that Trump supporters and Sanders supporters (the rabid ones) have much more in common than many people care to admit.

Much of Sander's base outside of millennials, especially in the red (GOP), white (demographic) and blue (Dem primary) states are voting for him for exactly the same reasons they voted for HRC in 08. The parallels are distinct and the pattern is so obvious everyone can easily predict what the results in those states will be. It comes as absolutely no surprise that those same voters will switch to Trump in the general election.

It is more than unsettling that some of Bernie's supporters find this something to boast about. They begrudgingly come up with "reasons" for the crossover from Sanders to Trump when the simple fact is a very sizable portion of white, male Dems refused to vote for Obama in 08 and 12 and that nearly identical proportion is now voting against Hillary.

Most of the media is ignoring the elephant in the room. I'm glad Todd and people like Robb Reiner are putting it out there during prime time because it only becomes the legitimate explanation when a white guy points it out. Our only defense is to maintain the Obama coalition of minorities and women and vote in our greater numbers to push back against the status quo. We have the power and we need to use it.
