An Open Letter to California Democrats and IndependentsPOSTED BY JERRY BROWN ON MAY 31, 2016
On Tuesday, June 7, I have decided to cast my vote for Hillary Clinton because I believe this is the only path forward to win the presidency and stop the dangerous candidacy of Donald Trump.
I have closely watched the primaries and am deeply impressed with how well Bernie Sanders has done. He has driven home the message that the top one percent has unfairly captured way too much of Americas wealth, leaving the majority of people far behind. In 1992, I attempted a similar campaign.
For her part, Hillary Clinton has convincingly made the case that she knows how to get things done and has the tenacity and skill to advance the Democratic agenda. Voters have responded by giving her approximately 3 million more votes and hundreds more delegates than Sanders. If Clinton were to win only 10 percent of the remaining delegates wildly improbable she would still exceed the number needed for the nomination. In other words, Clintons lead is insurmountable and Democrats have shown by millions of votes that they want her as their nominee.

(15,438 posts)it's actually a good sign for Hillary Clinton and Democrats. It means Gov. Brown - who isn't enamored with either Clintons - has seen the writing on the wall and, more importantly, the internal polls. He would've otherwise endorsed BS.
So this is good news, not because of his endorsement, but because the polls are showing a Hillary Clinton big win in CA!

(15,438 posts)As I recall it, there were some harsh words exchanged. He was 1992's version of BS - as he candidly explained during his endorsement (only with different words).

(2,897 posts)If I recall correctly, he didn't even endorse Bill after losing.

(15,438 posts)Which is why, I believe, he's been a bit of a pariah in the Democratic Party. Good thing we had Kamala Harris as our State's AG. When the DoJ wrestled money back from the banks and handed CA a percentage of our share, Gov. Brown wanted to use it to pay down the State's whopping $42 billion dollar deficit. But Kamala Harris, who was part of the fight together with the DoJ, protested that idea and she made sure Californians were given that money back.
And now AG Harris is running for Senator Boxer's seat against U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez - and it looks like our AG will win it.

(626 posts)internal polls that show Bernie being beaten after the GOP unleashes the commie stuff?

(15,438 posts)Clinton over Sanders when he implies in that very mealy-mouthed endorsement that he's more aligned with Sanders other than that he's seen the internals and the recent polls which show Hillary Clinton defeating Sanders in CA.

(6,444 posts)Brown is seventy-eight years old and hes in his final term as governor of California, meaning he can say anything he wants without fear of political repercussion. Hes also overwhelmingly popular enough in the state that his words carry real meaning there. He could have declined to endorse anyone for next weeks democratic primary, or endorsed Hillary Clintons rival Bernie Sanders, as a final act of protest against what he felt was an ugly 1992 primary race when he ran against Bill Clinton. But its clear that the governor isnt interested in playing politics. Its harbinger of whats about to come.
As of next Tuesday, Hillary Clinton will mathematically clinch the nomination. Thats the point at which the most prominent and respected voices in the Democratic Party can be expected to rally around her in even more unanimous fashion than they already have. Jerry Brown just wrote the final draft for the blueprint theyll be using: praise Bernie Sanders for stirring up excitement and for garnering an impressive number of votes in a losing effort, and then emphatically get behind Hillary Clinton in the general election battle against Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders is out of options. Now that hes behind by millions of popular votes and his campaign is a week from being over, hes reduced himself to threatening to grind the Democratic National Convention to a halt in an attempt to get his longtime personal foe Barney Frank removed from a committee position. Its now become clear that Sanders is willing to waste his few remaining bits of influence on trying to carry out petty personal vendettas. Meanwhile Jerry Brown, whose longtime personal feud with the Clintons goes back more than a quarter century, signaled today that the rest of the party considers this election too important to play such games.

(44,173 posts)he and the Clintons are still at arms-length. The 1992 primary was nasty between them. But they have reconciled to the point where they can professionally co-exist.
Brown is a popular governor too.
