Venezuela is the second least peaceful country in South America

Venezuela is the second least peaceful country in South America according to an index released on Tuesday in the United Kingdom. The index puts Iceland as the most peaceful country in the world and Somalia as the least peaceful country in a list of 158 territories.

Based on the Global Peace Index 2012, prepared by the Institute for Economics and peace, Chile is the most peaceful Latin American country, ranking 30; Colombia is the least peaceful, on position 144, Efe cited.

The top five in the list, started to be prepared in 2007, are Iceland, Denmark, New Zealand, Canada and Japan. Again, Western Europe is the most peaceful region in the world, with many of its countries among the first 20.

The Global Peace Index measures 23 indicators, such as military spending, internal conflict, social peace, terrorism, relations with neighboring countries or respect for human rights.

2. Well, having the least peaceful state in the region as an immediate neighbor probably doesn't help

I'd keep my armed forces well-stocked too if I had to share the neighborhood with Colombia.

of the 'National Militia' which Chavez has been fervently organizing, training and arming since he assumed power. (A large portion of the huge Russian armaments he purchased a couple of years ago went for AK-47's, RPG's etc for this group. The comparative breakdown is as follows:

Colombia: 185,000 total

Venezuela: 63,000 Army
18,300 Navy
n/a Air Force
36,000 National Guard
400,000 National Militia
