Hundreds of Obama and Maduro Effigies Burned in Caracas Easter Celebration
CARACAS Effigies representing U.S. President Barack Obama and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro were set ablaze this year in Venezuelas Easter Burning of Judas ritual, a tradition where effigies of people accused of treachery are set on fire.
The ritual, which concludes the holy week in Venezuela, was dominated by activist groups both supporting and opposing the two leaders, expected to meet at the Summit of the Americas in Panama later in the month.
Effigies of Obama and opposition leader Henrique Capriles, a staunch critic of Maduro and of late former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, were set on fire in the populated areas of central and west Caracas, famous for the Bolivarian Revolution.
Maduros effigies were burned in wealthy regions like the Plaza Altamira in eastern Caracas, along with effigies of the Unicameral National Assembly president, Diosdado Cabello, who is considered the second most influential proponent of Chavism in Venezuela.
