BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- The son of former Argentine President Carlos Menem has been detained for cocaine and arms possession.

Police say that 34-year-old Carlos Nair Menem was detained early Tuesday along with another man in Moreno, a city outside of Buenos Aires.

Both were carrying rifles and 9-millimeter pistols but didn't have permits for the weapons. Police say they also had small quantities of cocaine. They were detained without incident and transferred to the prosecutor's office for charges.

Menem's half-sister Zulema told Todo Noticias that her brother had previously been treated for drug addiction.

Carlos Menem was president between 1989 and 1999 and is currently a senator.

Had heard he was in trouble for arms trafficking, but the real scope of his trafficking, and connected treachery is far, far beyond what I had learned up until now.

The article mentions:

Despite this, the former president is protected by legislative privileges accruing to him as senator from the province of La Rioja.

How sweet. After all this dirty, illegal criminality and all he has to do is hold onto his Senate seat to keep out of prison. Looks as if he hopes to die of old age as a Senator.

Thank you so much for inviting people to learn more than the trickling, empty drool we get from US corporate "news" sources.
