Liberian President Praises Cuba for Ebola Crisis Help

Cuba sent the second largest number of medics to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea to help deal with the Ebola crisis after the U.K.


Liberian president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf praised the work of Cuban doctors who volunteered to help fight the Ebola virus during a meeting with Cuba’s vice-president of the State Council, Salvador Valdes.

Gathered in South Africa’s capital Johannesburg for an African Union summit, the two representatives discussed the work achieved by the Cuban professionals, often in very remote places with poor infrastructure.

For over a six month period, 258 Cuban doctors worked in African nations affected by the disease, including Liberia which was declared Ebola-free in May. Johnson-Sirleaf also acknowledged the effectiveness of the health care system in Cuba, which is rated the top 25 in the world in terms of life expectancy, despite a harsh economic blockade against it by the U.S.
