Updated 3:36 pm, Friday, January 19, 2018

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A Honduran legislator has been charged in a U.S. federal court with participating in a drug trafficking conspiracy and related weapons offenses.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says in a statement that it is seeking Fredy Najera Montoya's extradition.

Raymond Donovan, in charge of DEA special operations, says that "Najera used his position in the Honduran Congress to facilitate huge amounts of drug trafficking and corruption, while using security teams possessing dangerous and deadly weapons."

The anti-drug agency said Friday that Najera supported multiple drug trafficking organizations that received plane and boat loads of cocaine from Colombia that later made it to the U.S. Public officials, including members of the congress, took bribes to ensure safe passage.
