Puerto Rico defies board over law protecting workers

Updated 4:44 pm, Thursday, June 21, 2018

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Legislators in Puerto Rico are challenging a federal control board overseeing the island's finances over a law that protects workers from unjust firings.

Puerto Rico Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz said Thursday that the majority of legislators will not repeal the law as promised to the board and that they are prepared to go to court if needed.

The board has said it will not eliminate a Christmas bonus or reduce sick and vacation days in exchange for having the law repealed in a bid to help Puerto Rico emerge from an 11-year-old recession.

. . .

Gov. Ricardo Rossello recently told the board his administration would repeal the law. He did not immediately comment on Schatz's announcement.
