Trump Puts Notorious Regime Change Advocate, So-Called 'Abettor of Genocide' in Charge of Venezuela

Trump Puts Notorious Regime Change Advocate, So-Called ‘Abettor of Genocide’ in Charge of Venezuela Policy
by Colin Kalmbacher | 6:12 pm, January 28th, 2019

President Donald Trump is officially pushing for regime change in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. On Thursday, the White House released a statement recognizing opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president in defiance of the country’s democratically-elected president Nicolás Maduro.

The man recently selected to lead the United States’ controversial overthrow efforts is so-called “abettor of genocide,” Elliott Abrams. A notorious neoconservative and coup plotter, Abrams pleaded guilty to crimes during the Iran-Contra affair but was later pardoned by then-president George H.W. Bush on the recommendation of once-and-likely-future attorney general William Barr.

Abrams later led unsuccessful U.S. efforts to destabilize and overthrow the Venezuelan government in 2002 under the auspices of George W. Bush‘s regime-change-friendly White House–just months after Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chávez, won a landslide re-election victory.

. . .

According to the Holocaust Museum of Houston, more than 200,000 people were slaughtered; exactly 626 villages were destroyed; and nearly 1.7 million people were displaced in a country with a total population of just over 7 million. Abrams never had a problem with those massacres and repeatedly criticized human rights activists and other critics of U.S.-backed Guatemalan death squads.

Worth pointing out that the Nixon Administration greenlighted the coup against Allende in September, 1973; less than a year later, Nixon was forced from office in disgrace.

"Splendid Little Wars" are not enough to change the political realities; Trump and the rest of these idiots need to realize if it didn't work for Nixon, it sure as hell isn't going to work for Trump.

Given that about the only coherent foreign policy position of Trump's base is that they are tired of pointless conflict in various untidy corners of the world, seems unlikely they're going to rally to President Marmalard over the political costume assumed by whatever caudillo runs Venezuela.

Maduro's a thug, but there is a reason Chavez rose to power in the first place; he beat Salas Romer, who was also an insurgent candidate, in 1998 because the two previous majority parties were seen as corrupt and illegitimate.

AD and COPEI were corrupt for certain. And it could be argued that Chavez (and Trump) rose to power on a protest against business as usual.

I cannot find a single mainstream "right-wing" political party in Venezuela. All of them are center left or left. Even AD and VP and the rest of what used to be the MUD coalition are left. I don't see a right-winger anywhere in Venezuela that could get elected. (Unless the standard is anyone who doesn't pledge fealty to Marx is right-wing)

True enough...

It's unclear to me how much support Guaido may actually have among the people of Venezuela, although it is crystal clear that Trump et al are in no position to act as honest brokers in trying to assist Venezuela finding a positive and peaceful path forward.
