Cuba and the European Union will dialogue on Unilateral Coercive Measures, including the Blockade against the Island

Havana, April 23, 2024. The fourth Dialogue between Cuba-European Union on Unilateral Coercive Measures will take place this Wednesday, April 24 in Brussels, Belgium. The exchange will continue the one held in March 2021, in virtual format.

The parties will discuss the effects of the imposition of unilateral coercive measures as a means of exerting political and economic pressure against States, the legal and practical areas of existing legislation in the European Union to counteract the extraterritorial application of laws imposed by third countries, as well as the treatment of the issue in multilateral forums.

The Cuban delegation will be chaired by the Director General of Multilateral Affairs and International Law of the Foreign Ministry, Rodolfo Benítez Verson. He will update the European side on the intensification of the criminal blockade imposed by the United States against the Cuban people and the effects of the arbitrary and unjustified inclusion of Cuba in the unilateral List of States allegedly sponsoring terrorism, prepared by the Department of State. The effects of this policy on cooperation projects between Cuba and the European Union will be evaluated.

The European Union delegation will be headed by Mr. Pelayo Castro, Deputy Director General for the Americas of the European External Action Service (EEAS) and will also be made up of other senior officials of the European diplomatic service.

This meeting is held by virtue of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement concluded between Cuba and the European Union in 2016 and put into force, provisionally, in 2017, which is in its fourth cycle of implementation.
