AM radio in cars presents an engineering dilemma

AM radio in cars presents an engineering dilemma

MARCH 27, 2024 BY BILL SCHWEBER LEAVE A COMMENT

Design engineers are caught between a push to drop AM radios from cars and the radio industry’s pushback.

It hasn’t received much attention among all the other news (mostly bad, some good), but there’s some momentum in the U.S. Congress to mandate the inclusion of AM radio receivers in cars. Among all the other issues with which Congress is grappling (make your own list here), this may seem like a fairly small issue, but it is not to the key players and has major costs, consequences, and implications.

Who are the players? On one side, it’s the AM radio broadcasters who fear that they will lose a significant fraction of their audience if AM in cars disappears – apparently, that’s a major listening venue for their audience. On the other side, vehicle makers are challenged by the cost and design effort to make AM radio receiver performance acceptable in today’s EMI/RFI-spewing cars, especially electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV).

Tesla, Volvo, and BMW are among the companies that have already stopped providing AM receiver functionality in some models; last year, Ford said it would join them but reconsidered and reversed that decision after it got political heat from lawmakers.

There are many interesting, viable, and legitimate arguments made by each side. The arguments for retaining and mandating AM are that it has wide, low-cost reach and is a valuable resource in case of emergencies such as natural disasters. it doesn’t take a lot of infrastructure to maintain links between broadcasts and the listeners. As long as the transmitter is powered up, you can reach and add listeners very easily, and there’s no limit to their number. There’s also the historic, almost nostalgic case that AM radio was the first electronic mass-media technology, so how can we toss it overboard?

They think the man is taking their precious away from them.

Their precious being rwnj talk radio.

Bs. They all have cell phones. They all can get streaming shows of their favorite hate.

Most don't even spend that much time in their cars listening to it.

They just don't want the libs to take it away.

Let them pay for it as an option like everything else. There is lots of fm bandwidth they can get it for free anyway.

6. I'm not a magat. I want both radio bands in cars, and on all other radios.

I spent 11 years working in radio. Most of it on AM stations. I don’t listen to much AM anymore, except for some game broadcasts, but I want it available. FM is line of sight; depending on frequency and wattage, AM signals can go much farther — particularly at night when the sky wave comes into play.

9. AM reception

In 1980 i was in southern Missouri 350miles from Chicago listening to 89.0 WLS. in my 1972 Chevelle. Those days are gone.
Of the 4 cars in my driveway he 2017 Doge caravan has the best reception with an old style long antenna sticking out of the fender.
My 2011 Buick has terrible reception and my two Ram Promaster vans are worse than that. They have what are called half wave antennas.
I just installed an aftermarket antenna on a ram van and it seems to be a lot better. I need to listen to Stephanie miller on 820AM Chicago.
Have done a lot of research on forums about antennas and idiots always change the reception questions to looks and appearance.
Even Chevy decided to keep selling normal antennas on trucks out west because they work!
I did try to find an extension cable from the vans roof to run to a whip antenna on a separate mount but no luck.

It's called "progress"... change happens, whether we like it or not. The rest of us have to adjust to change. The Magats better start learning pretty quick!

We managed to survive moving on from wind-up phonographs and 6” black and white TVs. They’ll survive without it.

For all I care, they can leave AM radio in cars as an option, and don’t bother to try and solve the interference problems. “Hey, we tried to tell ya….!”

when all you've got is FM. Everything I want to hear is on AM. I can listen to music all the way across the US and get actual news everywhere but only from AM. There is actual talk radio so I can listen to another human voice. I may not agree with what's being said but it is a voice and I'm not alone out there in the darkness

to AM radio. As far as I'm concerned all Magats, especially the leader, should go directly to jail for pissing me off for breathing
